What can I say, it’s the best show.  First, the designers revisit Gristedes to create unconventional designs – kudos to Korto for the veggies – and Kenley, that schoolyard – 4-square ball bustier was divine.  Then the green fabric challenge – and while all the models chose the same organic fabric (Mood – is your selection that lacking?) – again an inspired show.  This week, the designers were asked to create innovative garments from Saturn Hybrid car parts and a couple of them really “strapped in” and floored it.  Jerrell’s car “innards” became great accents to a really lovely piece – and who would’ve thunk that Saturn armrests as hip accents could be so beautiful and flattering – Leanne, a deserved taking of the checkered flag – I’m ready to drive that one off the lot!

I spent Sunday cheering on and being inspired by my great friend Fanny Retsek as she completed her first marathon (5 hours, 38 minutes – thank you very much!) .  As I and friends waited at one of the cheering sections for her to run by, I noticed all of the discarded water cups on the street and wondered if they were eco – friendly, going to be recycled, etc. so I did a little snooping:

Compostable!!  Nice job.  Some other great green things I noticed:

-The Health & Fitness Expo – generated by bio-fuel

-Runners could donate to NativeEnergy, and help offset their carbon footprint in getting to and from the race

-My favorite: Used running shoes were dropped off at the expo for donation to St. Vincent de Paul Society

Cool event, cool organization – while I may never run any farther than the distance between my car and my favorite flea market booth at the DeAnza -  if I do, it will be at the SFM…

Hit this annual San Jose garage sale on Saturday - and IMHO –  this oldest and largest neighborhood association in San Jose knows how to throw ‘em.  With my guess of 100 booths set around the perimeter of Backesto Park – it was large, but had the feeling of a small block party.  I saw neighbors mingling, kids playing cricket, I drooled over the tamales and popcorn –  and took in plenty of deals.  The event not only lets residents connect with friends and the community, it raises a few bucks for the association  – and my favorite, gives folks a chance to get those old things off the shelf and into the hands of treasure – hunting jewelry designers dying to give them a new life!

And did I mention deals?  Lots of second hand clothing for $1 – found a great, gold and black sequin-laden dress – got a much needed metal tin for my scissors (hello – for free!) and my fave find – an entire box of vintage matchbooks - soon to be repurposed into a Gussy Green collection for sure!

Mark your calendars for next year’s market – Saturday, August 1 2009.
