San Francisco Marathon – Going Green
August 6, 2008
I spent Sunday cheering on and being inspired by my great friend Fanny Retsek as she completed her first marathon (5 hours, 38 minutes – thank you very much!) . As I and friends waited at one of the cheering sections for her to run by, I noticed all of the discarded water cups on the street and wondered if they were eco – friendly, going to be recycled, etc. so I did a little snooping:
Compostable!! Nice job. Some other great green things I noticed:
-The Health & Fitness Expo – generated by bio-fuel
-Runners could donate to NativeEnergy, and help offset their carbon footprint in getting to and from the race
-My favorite: Used running shoes were dropped off at the expo for donation to St. Vincent de Paul Society
Cool event, cool organization – while I may never run any farther than the distance between my car and my favorite flea market booth at the DeAnza - if I do, it will be at the SFM…
